What Is a Control System

A control system is a set of mechanical or electronic devices that regulates other devices or systems by way of control loops. Typically, control systems are computerized.

Control systems are a central part of production and distribution in many industries. Automation technology plays a big role in these systems. The types of control loops that regulate these processes include industrial control systems, such as supervisory control and data acquisition, systems and distributed control systems.

Advantages of Control System

Fast and error-free

Control system have very fast response to the input, and they work faster than humans. They reduce the time and human effort in doing the same work. Control system make very minimal error while giving output, which makes it perfect in the jobs where there is a high risk of mistakes and errors. They subsequently reduce the error which humans can make easily because they are designed in such a way that they can operate with precision, leading to error free performance.

Accuracy

We can completely rely on the output given by control system. They are so accurate that they give the same output every time if the input given to it is same. The control system increases the productivity and minimizing the variation in results.

Adaptable and efficient

The control system can be programmed in such a way that they can sense the change and respond it accordingly. They can work in any type of environment and makes almost zero error. They are efficient since they reduce the time and does the work with perfection and accurately.

Security

We can blindly trust on the control system as they are safe and secure. Since there is no human intervention in the process of control system, they are more reliable as compared to humans. Control systems are equipped with many types of monitoring capabilities that can track the system's behavior. They indicate or cutdown the process if they detect any abnormal behavior or anomalies. The response is quick and can lead to temporary shutting down that specific process. This automated anomaly detection in control system is very crucial for safety purpose.

Optimal resource utilization

Control system can optimize and utilize the use of recourses provided to them and make the best use of them. It minimizes human intervention in even doing difficult tasks and improved resources utilization.

Real-time monitoring system

Control system provides real time monitoring which help to make a quick decision while analyzing the performance of the system. It also allows to detect anomalies in the system and the early detection of error can reduce a big potential issue.

Integration with other complex system

It integrate its function with other systems for better performance. This integration with other systems increases the capability of system and coordination provides perfection and productivity inside the system.

Optimization

We can optimize the complex process into smaller different process and find the best operation to achieve the goal. It can be monitored and remotely controlled which is important aspect of control system and ensures error free performance, especially in task which are prone to high risk and mistakes.

Importance of Control System

Control systems are necessary for several reasons, some of which are as follows:

Automation: Automation is enabled by the control system in many commercial, industrial, and residential processes. They are efficient in reducing human intervention.

Improved performance: Control systems are very helpful in improving process performance. To achieve the desired result, it regulates and optimizes the input signals.

Predictive maintenance: The predictive maintenance technique helps determine the service-equipment condition for estimating when maintenance will be performed. Control systems are helpful in such processes by monitoring equipment performance and predicting when maintenance is required.

Safety: Control systems are instrumental in improving many processes. They help in regulating and optimize input signals for achieving desired outputs.

Consistency: They can ensure consistency in processes. The control system maintains a set of desired parameters/outputs over time.

Scalability: Control systems can be designed for scaling to larger or more complex systems. They also ensure that efficiency is not decreased and results in productive output.

Consistency: The control systems ensure consistency is maintained in the processes. They maintain the set of outputs or parameters over time.

How Do Control Systems Work

A control system is a device or set of devices used to manage the behavior of other devices or systems.
A control loop is arranged in a system to effectively regulate a critical process variable at an optimal value, called the set point value. Control loops typically include sensors, control algorithms and control actuators. In a control system, a controller is used to manipulate a variable in order to keep the process functioning at the set point value. The difference between the set point value and the current value of the process variable is called the error, which is used to generate an output signal. This output signal is sent to another device, the actuator, to bring the process back to the set point value, via a feedback mechanism. The feedback mechanism will also include some sensing of the error value and the desired results, enabling control systems to adapt to varying process operating circumstances to some extent.

Control variables
A controller can be used to control any process which has the following variables:
1. Process Variable, PV: A measurable output. This is the actual target variable value.
2. Set Point, SP: A known ideal value for the target variable. The optimal target variable value.
3. Control Variable, CV: The control variable will adjust the amount of control exerted on the process variable. an input to the process.
Error values in control systems refer to how far the process variable (PV) is operating from the set point value (SP). Error = SP - PV. The controller attempts to minimize this error by adjusting the control variable (CV).
The controller response is described in terms of responsiveness to the process error i.e. the degree to which the controller overshoots the set point, and the degree of system oscillation.

PID controllers
A PID controller is a generic control loop feedback mechanism using a well known algorithm. It is very common in industrial control systems. Adding a filter to the controller removes noise signals from the system, and enables better control output.
The PIDF (proportional–integral–derivative-filter controller) controller algorithm involves four separate constant parameters:
1. Proportional value (P)
2. Integral value (I)
3. Derivative value (D)
4. Filter value (F)

Loop tuning
When a disturbance to the process occurs, the controller needs time to reduce the error signal to zero, and restore the process back to the set point value. By adapting the four parameters in the PIDF controller algorithm, the controller can provide the required control action for this optimal process functioning. This is referred to as loop tuning – optimizing the PIDF values to get more accurate and effective loop control. If the loop is tuned properly, the response time to disturbances will be reduced. If the loop is tuned too aggressively, cycling and overshoot of the set point value can occur.

Control loop performance
Well performing loops are defined as when the monitored process variable (PV) varies within the defined process upper and lower control limits.
Poorly performing loops describe loops where the monitored PV functions outside of the desired process control limits.

System stability
Processes are in a stable state when there is a zero performance error: the process variable is operating at the desired set point value, so PV = SP.
Making a control change that is too large for a small error value leads to a system overshoot of the set point value. If this occurs repeatedly, and the PV repeatedly overshoots the SP, the PV will oscillate around the set point in either a constant, growing, or decaying sinusoid. If these oscillations increase with time then the system is unstable, whereas if they decrease the system is stable. If the oscillations remain at a constant magnitude the system is marginally stable, although it may still potentially be described as a poorly performing loop if the oscillation values overshoot the process limits.

How to Choose the Best Control System

Identify your needs
The first step in choosing a control system is to identify what you want it to do.
Do you care most about safety? Do you want to control your lights and thermostats from far away? Make a list of the features that matter to you.

Compatibility
